Spelling Changes in the Preterite

Certain verbs have spelling changes in some forms of the preterit tense. There are three types of spelling changes as shown here. It must be remembered that the endings for each verb are completely regular and that they all follow the pattern for regular -ar preterit verbs.

1. Verbs that end in -gar, the first person singular (yo) form is -gué.

2. Verbs that end in -car, the first person singular (yo) form is -qué.

3. Verbs that end in -zar, the first person singular (yo) form is -Ce.
