Spanish preposition “Bajo”

The Spanish preposition “Bajo” points a lower status, dependency or subjection of a person or thing over another.
Let’s see an example: (Veamos un ejemplo):

a) Place: El gato está bajo la cama (The cat is under the bed)

“Abajo” is not the same than “Bajo or Debajo”. “Bajo and Debajo mean the same, but they are used different.

Let’s see some examples with the three of them:

El edificio se vino abajo = The building collapsed

La serpiente está debajo del auto = The snake is under the car.

La serpiente está bajo el auto = The snake is under the car.

b) Way: Bajo el régimen comunista. (Under the communist regime)
