We can predict the gender of the Spanish nouns for a living creature.

Most of the nouns for living creatures that end in –a- are “usually” feminine and most of the nouns that end in –o- are “usually” masculine. Exceptions: papa, which is el papa

We say usually because with are going to see the exceptions for the non-living creatures.  It is vital to mention that the nouns have (in general) “definite articles la/el , las/los” because they are a clue to whether the noun is masculine or feminine.

Let’ see some examples:

La or El means “The” – El responds to a masculine noun and La responds for a feminine noun.

El perro (The dog) is a living creature that ends with “o”, therefore is masculine.

La gata (the cat) is a living creature that ends with “a”, therefore is feminine.

El chico(The boy) is a living creature that ends with “o”, therefore is masculine.

La chica (The girl) is a living creature that ends with “a”, therefore is feminine.

El abuelo (The grandfather) is a living creature that ends with “o”, therefore is masculine.

La abuela (The grandmother) is a living creature that ends with “a”, therefore is feminine.

La mama (the mom) is a living creature that ends with “a”, therefore is feminine.

Masculine nouns that end in a consonant often have a corresponding feminine form that ends in -a.

El profesor (The professor) – masculine noun that ends in a consonant

La profesora (The professor) – Feminine correspondent feminine of “profesor”

El doctor (the doctor) – masculine noun that ends in a consonant

La doctora (the doctor) – Feminine correspondent feminine of “profesor”

Nouns that refer to people and that use the same form from masculine and feminine. Therefore, the gender of these nouns are shown by the definite article “la or el”

EL cantante- masculine

LA cantante- feminine
