LE

Which means to you, him, her, it. As you see is very generic

Maria prepara una torta a Juan

Prepara: Verb. Present of Preparar (to prepare)

Who is preparing? Maria. Then Maria is the subject

What is preparing? Una torta. Direct Object

To Whom is preparing? To Juan. Indirect Object

Maria le prepara una torta

Prepara: Verb. Present of Preparar (to prepare)

Who is preparing? Maria. Then Maria is the subject

What is preparing? Una torta. Direct Object

To Whom is preparing? Le (Le replaces a Juan) Then Le is the indirect object

When “Le” is in context you can leave it without adding “to really Whom” you are doing the action, however, if you  you do not use any context you always have to add also to whom are you doing it for. In the previous case would be: Juan le prepara una torta a Juan.  Because without a context le could mean you, him, her, it. Therefore adding a person you know who you are talking about.

You can also use the indirect object noun in addition to the pronoun if you want to emphasize to whom or for whom the action is occurring.
Por ejemplo:

Te invito a ti y nadie más.
I’m inviting you and no one else.

LES

With “Les” is the same but it is plural. Let’s see an example:

Who is preparing? Maria. Then Maria is the subject

What is preparing? Una torta. Direct Object

To Whom?: Les pronoun replaces los chicos
